Orchids

Apart from the Kimberleys and Bungle Bungles, orchids were the main purpose of our trip. Our timing was geared to ensure we reached Kalbarri and the southern half of WA in time for the wildflower season, which works its way slowly down the state. We saw vast amounts of orchids, and met some of the state's foremost authorities on orchids. Below is a representative selection from a huge collection of pictures. In deference to those amongs our friends who are botanically challenged, Jean has swallowed her prejudice against Common Names and we have classified them thereby, presuming that the cognoscenti will know the scientific names anyway :-)

Cowslip orchids
These were one of the most colourful and plentiful right through our journey, but with several different local species:
Donkey orchids
Donkey orchids turned up everywhere, but again with different local species.

Clown orchids

Other orchids (Leek, Sun, Hare, Beaks, Bluebeard etc)

Greenhoods

Spider Orchids

These were the most spectacular, and most prolific, of the WA orchids.
