Wave Rock, The Nullarbor & home

Our plans to cross the Nullarbor Plain on the Indian Pacific train were frustrated by restrictions on vehicle height because of low bridges, so if we were going to drive the Nullarbor a consolation was the chance to visit Wave Rock, a curious geological formation near Hyden, 330 Kms inland from Perth and conveniently on the way to the start of the Nullarbor at Norseman, and with promising orchid spots along the way :-)
Where better to go surfing than Wave Rock:

Climbing above the rock, we found Hyden had its own mini Wall of China - not to keep rabbits out, but to channel water into the town reservoir:

Our trip across the Nullarbor was uneventful (we'd done it years before when we first got the van, so knew what to expect - I didn't even manage to repeat my previous feat of blowing the generators in two parks by switching on too many appliances; electric heaters are the culprit).

The driving is fairly easy, if boring: but you have to avoid the wildlife:and you may have to share the road with an airplane in a hurry:

Our stay at Eucla was enlivened by a friendly goat, which though hobbled, had the run of the place:Highlight of the Nullarbor was the whale viewing station at the Head of the Bight, 20 kilometres to the east of Nullarbor Roadhouse. Between June and October of each year up to 100 Southern Right Whales frequent this area of the South Australian coastline to breed and give birth to whale calves. From the main viewing platform Southern Right Whales can be observed at close quarters displaying a variety of behaviour including tail slapping, breaching, blowholing and rolling belly up. Though easy to see, the whales are less easy to capture with the camera!

The whale watching centre is immaculately appointed, and they want to keep it that way:

The rest of our trip home went smoothly; a few days to do some fishing at Streaky Bay turned out to have gale force winds, so we had to dine at the hotel to get our sea food. We spent several pleasant days visiting Melbourne to see Dermot, and visit the Art Deco exhibition, and then arrive home exactly as scheduled - and very pleased to see Aranda, despite enjoying all our travels :-)
